7 Reasons to Visit the Texas Renaissance Festival
Visiting the Texas Renaissance Festival together last year was pretty fun, so we went again this year. Are we making this a thing? Sure. It’s a great reason to have company over. Chris and I live in a house in Katy, TX just outside of Houston, but our lives are still in the city. So we commute, nbd. We can rarely convince our friends to make the long drive out to see us, except for the rare Renaissance Festival lover. Ren Fest is almost two hours away from Houston, or a mere 45 minutes from our house. This year, Omar and his new girlfriend Isabela made for most excellent company.…

Surfing Around Matagorda Beach
For anyone else who tires of being a spectator, here’s something surfy from Chris’s point of view surfing around Matagorda Beach. These were all taken using Chris’s GoPro on a beautiful, clean fall day on the beach with some beautiful waves. Standing on the beach taking pictures is fun for a while, but soon enough you have to test the waters. For me, the point of view of the video really underscores the amount of effort it takes to get in there and the singleminded purpose it takes. Waves are messy (just like life). It’s literally an uphill battle to get out there – all for a few seconds sliding…

Texas Renaissance Festival
Last weekend Chris and I made it out to the Texas Renaissance Festival, with his friends Omar and Jefferson. If you don’t know what a renaissance festival is, it’s like a little town going back in time. There’s a big gathering of vendors who sell their Medieval-to-Renaissance themed wares including clothing, jewelry, home, and gifts. Even the food includes medieval-style fare like giant turkey legs and mead, although since it’s Texas there was also a fair share of Cajun style foods. The festival is made up of a little community of shops, dining, fairgrounds, and stages for plays and music every hundred yards or so. Check out this map, which…

What Lies Inside
“What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside you.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson. While I was editing these photos from Matagorda, my friend and I started doing that thing again, where we start projecting what we would like to be doing in the future. This is usually a really abstract and vague idea like “I would like to be a millionaire”. The line of thinking naturally turns from there to “how do I become a millionaire” back to the reality of our fairly normal lives that most likely won’t lead to being a millionaire anytime soon, and some rather toxic ideas about ourselves. This kind…

Where Are Texas Waves?
Do people even surf in Texas? Where are Texas Waves? I hear this all the time. Or jokes about how there are no waves or surf in the Gulf. It’s true, most days the Gulf has waves that are much weaker than the big ocean waves in Hawaii. The Gulf’s waves are always weakened by the Caribbean islands. But Texas has a lot of surfers. Chris says it has more days with surfable waves than many of the popular surf spots on the East coast because of the Gulf current patterns. Texas surf is burly, with short powerful waves that can be difficult to paddle out through. But they are waves!…
