While I was editing these photos from Matagorda, my friend and I started doing that thing again, where we start projecting what we would like to be doing in the future. This is usually a really abstract and vague idea like “I would like to be a millionaire”. The line of thinking naturally turns from there to “how do I become a millionaire” back to the reality of our fairly normal lives that most likely won’t lead to being a millionaire anytime soon, and some rather toxic ideas about ourselves.
This kind of thinking should really be avoided! I actually do like my reality quite a bit. I can’t compare myself to other people or alternate realities, especially because the frame of reference just isn’t there. What’s right for you isn’t necessarily what’s right for me, and it cheapens the experience. I find that in order to grow at all – creatively or physically or emotionally or mentally – I have to make room and give myself permission.
You know what else? I like my normal life! When it was time to choose whether I wanted to take a career path that led to money or one that led to the pursuit of creative interests, I chose the creative path. This led to a moderate and not-so-creative job that lets me keep my creativity for when I come home. It’s not draining. I would still make those choices, if I could go back.
Also, I don’t know that people who are building millionaire lives have time to go to the beach and wander.
