Matagorda Spring Surf Breakers

Last weekend the beach was so crowded with Spring Breakers! It was cool to see so many people having such a good time out there, even if the shoreline did get really full. We had to drive foreeeeever to find a space we fit in, but luckily Chris has his cute little white-top FJ to 4×4 us wherever we need to go to find the right waves.

We hadn’t been to the beach together since the cloudy day in Galveston surfing in the fog after Christmas. It had been too long! Between our busy schedules and disorganized weekend waves, there just wasn’t a good day until now.

Welcome to the beach!

Swimming out past the breaker. The waves were nice and strong and clean. It’s so funny the way on some shorelines the surf doesn’t look so big, but then when you get out there the waves are actually waaaaaay over your head – because you’re sitting on a board – and you just start questioning your life decisions. But there’s no turning back, really. If you make it past the breaker you may as well ride it in. Carefully. One of us did tumble over the falls. I’m not going to say who, but it wasn’t me 😉

This wave was ridiculously long and fast! At one point, Chris actually flew up in the air on his board and stayed on it, of course, because he has really good balance.

Chris always going back out as soon as he comes in 🙂

Who’s happy Spring is finally here? Me. Although I am super heartbroken that Calvera Swimwear went out of business and will no longer sell surf suits like this one. Where am I going to find surf suits? I don’t know yet, but I’ll keep you posted with what works best. In the meantime, I have 5 Calavera suits in rotation and that’s about it… None of the other ones compare, but there are a few brands I haven’t tried yet. Let me know if you have any recommendations!

Such dramatic light on the sand.

This rust shibori dress flows perfectly with these beachy days. Read more about why I love this dress here.

Matagorda is usually pretty quiet, which I like. We spend enough time in the city during the week, that it’s nice to get away from the crowds for a few hours on the sand. This kayaker has the right idea! Last Sunday we had Big SUP teacher orientation at Lake 288, and I ended up leaving with a new-to-me Boga Yoga Board!!! Can’t wait to take it out in Matagorda 🙂
