    Surfing Galveston’s New Beach?

    /

So… who knew surfing Galveston is looking up? I had no idea that they rebuilt the beach out south of 61st street. Along with the new shoreline comes a fun set of sandbars to learn. Last weekend there was a hurricane in Mexico, so we headed out for some beach time on Sunday. With the hurricane so far away, the waves were only about 2-3 feet, but they were 10-14 seconds long! Much power, much fun. It was a day of really gentle, long waves that you could stand up on forever. By the time I got around to taking pictures (after a ride and a nap), the waves had…

    DIY Silver-Plated Agate Coasters

    /

Looking for a silver lining? These sleek silver-plated agate coasters are so easy to DIY. Agate slices come in so many beautiful colors. This marine tone works perfectly with our dining and living room, but turquoise and natural stone tones are also a lovely choice. Chris says the silver plating makes it look like they came from the moon. Or maybe we live on the moon. In a moon unit. Sorry (not sorry) for the quirky Frank Zappa reference. The silver plating looks great with our decor, but gold plating is another popular choice for a similar effect. You can also skip the plating for an even simpler diy. Raw…

Barbarian Days Book Review + July Reading List

    /

As promised – the Barbarian Days book review. I’ve finally finished Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life by William Finnegan. I’d had my eye on the book for a while, and when it won a Pulitzer Prize for autobiography this spring, it suddenly made it’s way into my hands. Surfing. Chris calls it “the fever”. As in “he has the fever” – the only way to describe someone known to disappear at a surf buoy’s notice. In case you didn’t notice from the blog photos, Chris has the fever. Finnegan has lived with the fever and will take you, the willing reader, on that journey with him. William Finnegan’s prose makes surf culture…

Matagorda Surfing + Nothing But Blue Skies

    /

These are a few more waves from Matagorda surfing in July. We were able to go out on the jetties and the beach! I caught a few really long waves, and of course Chris caught every one that came along. The waves were long and powerful, if choppy from an offshore wind. When I first went out, it was hard to keep the board straight. The current was coming from so many different directions. You can kind of see it in all of that white water. But once I caught a wave, it was powerful enough that I didn’t have to worry about that anymore. The water is shallow near…

    Paleo Strawberry Ice Cream Recipe

    /

Dairy-free, vegan-friendly, no added sugar, and this paleo strawberry ice cream is still delicious! I am starting to get some good legs on this new ice cream machine. This latest recipe for dairy-free strawberry ice cream really knocked it out of the park and is my new favorite. Chris came back for seconds 🙂 And I wanted to eat it all myself. Just kidding! Sharing is the fun part. It’s starting to get pretty hot in Houston already, so I’m so glad that I invested in this ice cream machine to help keep cool during the summer. Enjoy this strawberry ice cream on its own, or heap it over some…

Hello!

Artist and writer in Houston, painting my way through a slower kind of life. Likely By Sea is where the studio spills into everything else — watercolor and process, slow craft, whole-food cooking, coastal days, and the small style-and-living notes in between. Trained as a fine artist; the rest just follows the same eye.
