    Lingering Summer Surf

    /

Never change, stay the same. Lately we’ve been wistful to leave the beach at dusk. Chris is always the last one out of the water. It’s never really a good idea to stay in the water after dark. The water cools down and this is feeding time for sharks. Even though sharks aren’t likely to bite – they don’t like the taste of humans – it’s better not to risk it. Sharks have poor eyesight. Add the low visibility of the murky Gulf and you can’t really be surprised if a shark accidentally chomps you. But the golden hour is the best time for photographs. We don’t have anything else…

My latest favorite app is Touch Retouch. A lot of the time with iPhone photography, timing is everything. I snap pics when I don’t have my DSLR with me, but also when I don’t have enough time to grab it. When you’re trying to snag the moment, sometimes you just don’t have enough time to properly frame the photo or wait for extra people to move out of the background. Or maybe it’s a crowded day at the beach, or there is a lot of trash on the ground. Touch Retouch works wonders. I seriously can’t believe how well this thing works. Sometimes it even does a better job than…

    The Moon and Surfing

    /

The Gulf waves were beautiful again in Surfside. Chris says it’s not often that this late in July we get these big gentle rolling waves with just enough power to surf and time to bask in the sun at the third sandbar. I spent most of the day surfing, but caught Chris’s story on this wave. It was a day for old school, leathery surfers on longboards. However old they may look, they are in better shape than me. This surfer has a campy style. I think he was the one who surfed a few headstands. At the end of the day we stayed past sundown for the first time…

    How to Grow Pineapple Plant

    /

You may have read this article about my avocado plant growing obsession. I’ve decided that I have enough avocados growing and need to give a slice of another fruit a try. Several of my friends have had success in growing pineapples in Houston. I love pineapple. Most mornings I start the day with a pineapple, mango, and greens smoothie. If only I had an endless supply of pineapple! I don’t, but I have started with one. Growing pineapples is much easier than you think. Pineapples don’t actually grow from trees. They belong to the bromeliad family, and grow like a shrub. A mature shrub will eventually send out suckers, which can…

Hello!

Artist and writer in Houston, painting my way through a slower kind of life. Likely By Sea is where the studio spills into everything else — watercolor and process, slow craft, whole-food cooking, coastal days, and the small style-and-living notes in between. Trained as a fine artist; the rest just follows the same eye.
