One of my favorite things about Spring is planting season. Chris and I just moved into a house, and I’ve been eagerly waiting for the time when we could start our spring gardening. Since I’ve always lived in an apartment, I’ve been a devoted container gardener and this is my first time planting in the ground. Also, my last apartment didn’t get enough light to grow vegetables, so I’m so excited to be able to start growing tomatoes again!
It turns out that Chris used to work on an organic farm. Not only does he know all about gardening in the ground, he also really likes to till the earth. So he did the hard work of turning the soil for our garden patch, and creating a couple of raised rows of earth to put the plants on. Each row fits 3 plants, so the first row has tomatoes and the second row has peppers. We’re going to plant vining plants like cucumber and vining spinach in a different garden patch. Once the rows were tilled, we lined bricks around the border of the garden, leaving a gap in one side for a drain. Then we put tomato cages around each tomato plant.
The soil is so amazing here! Since hardly anything except grass has been growing for several years, it’s really rich in nutrients. This picture was taken a week after planting. You can already see a few yellow flowers coming in! This tomato plant is a cherry tomato plant.
And this one is the sweet million. It should be a quick and heavy producer. Looking forward to a lot of tomatoes!
Here is the roma tomato plant. We will make all kinds of sauces with this one.
There are already yellow buds! This tomato plant will bloom all season, but some of these early buds might drop off instead of turning into fruit because the plant isn’t really established yet. It’s roots need to grow and become firm in the ground.
The wisteria vine is blooming.
Fern lavender is my favorite type of lavender. Here are a few photos of other cute plants in my garden, but I’ll tell you more about them later.
