DIY Choker Lariat Necklace

This choker lariat necklace style is everywhere right now. Chokers are way back. I haven’t worn a choker since middle school, really, so it feels like an exciting new wardrobe piece. They’re a great accent to all of the high neck and off shoulder styles right now. This choker diy imitates multiple wraps with crimp ribbon findings that make an adjustable clasp at the neck. If you want to make the choker necklace even more simple you can always just cut the suede to length, add a charm or beads to it, wrap it around your neck a few times and tie it off like a bolo with a bow or loose knot.

DIY Choker Lariat Necklace Materials

2 14-inch Suede Leather
2 32-Inch Suede Leather
2 Clamp Findings
1 Half Moon Charm Finding
3 Jump Rings
1 Lobster Claw Clasp
3 Inches Chain
1 Small Charm
2 Pairs of Needle Nose Pliers
Jeweler’s Glue or Clear Nail Polish

I used suede leather to make this choker lariat necklace, but ribbon or velvet would work just as well. The longer lariat ends are 32 inches long, but it’s not against the rules to make it longer or shorter. I love the versatility of this choker necklace style, because you can knot it like a bolo or wrap it around a few extra times and tie it off with a bow for a shorter style. Make sure to measure the length you’ll need for that if you intend on wearing it shorter.

DIY Choker Lariat Necklace Instructions

Choker necklace lengths are typically 14 inches long, but we’ll finish the necklace with an extension chain so you can adjust it to up to 17 inches.

Take the 2 14-inch pieces of suede and one of the longer pieces of suede. Carefully line the ends of them up with the 14-inch pieces are on top and the longer one is on the bottom. Dab a bit of jeweler’s glue on the ends. Take one of the ribbon crimp end terminators, and use the needle nose pliers to crimp it over the suede ends.

Now for the other side. Take the opposite ends of the 14-inch suede pieces. Smooth them down so there are no twists between them. Line the other 32-inch piece of suede up next to them. Make sure the alignment is right. When the necklace is on, the 32 inch pieces should both hang on the bottom outside of the necklace. Dap jeweler’s glue on these suede ends, and clasp them together with the ribbon clamp too.

Add the charm to a jump ring and drop it on the middle piece of suede.

Almost done! Attach a lobster clasp to one end of the necklace with a jump ring.

Attach the extension chain to the other end with a jump ring. I like to add a cute little charm at the end of the extension chain too.

How to Style Choker Lariat Necklace

I initially thought I would add an embellishment at the ends of the bolo piece of this necklace with a knotted bead or charm strung through a sewn loop. The choker necklace ended up looking great without any added embellishment to busy it up, but it would still look cool if you add that to yours, especially if you didn’t have a charm like the half moon that I used. I love the way big pearl charms look on this necklace style too.

If you don’t have enough time to DIY this necklace style, you can always pick one up in the store. Here are a few of my favorites:
