Memories of Christmas always include tunes from the Sound of Music. When my sister and I were little girls, my mother had a record player with only a few albums we could listen to. One of them was the Sound of Music, and the others were all Christmas albums. My mother, sister and I would all sing along while we danced around the living room of our house, which proudly wore the seafoam green of Miami-Vice themed walls. Brown paper packages tied up with string. This year I’m wrapping everyone’s presents with brown paper packaging, and embellishing them with different strings and bows. Read on for a few more of my favorite holiday gift wrap ideas this year.

DIY Paper Snowflake for Holiday Gift Wrap

In keeping with the brown paper packages, paper snowflakes are the closest we get to snowflakes that fall on your nose and eyelashes in Texas. This 3d paper snowflake makes a fun embellishment to any package, or decoration to hang by the tree or around the house.

To make this snowflake, you’ll need six sheets of paper (origami or printer), clear scotch tape, a measuring tape, and scissors.

First, take a regular piece of printer paper and cut it into a square.

Fold it in half.

And fold it in half again. So it’s in fourths.

Use a ruler to draw 3 equidistant lines on the paper. Since I used 8.5 x 11 paper, mine ended up being 1.5 inches wide each. Cut through both folds of paper along these lines to about 1 cm from the paper crease.

Unfold the paper, and you should have triangular cuts that look like this. Tape the two innermost points together.

Turn the paper over, and tape the next two most innermost points together.

Turn the paper over, and tape the next two innermost points together.

Tape the last two points together on the opposite side, and let the paper naturally fall to its side. It should look like this. This is one point on the snowflake.

Make six of these points total, and tape them together in a big pretty circle. You’ll join the paper together at the end point and on each side. I’ve seen some people do pretty cool things with layering these or experimenting with different shapes. Make it unique!
