#GIRLBOSS Book Review + Nasty Galaxy

girlboss book review

Ok, so I finally caved and read this book. #GIRLBOSS has topped the list of basically every woman’s business book resource list lately. What is #GIRLBOSS about? It’s Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso’s memoir about her experience going from a broke dumpster-diving teen to building a successfully retail business with a cult community following – all without acquiring any real debt. The content doesn’t focus so much on merchandising, startup culture, or retail strategy, although some business gems on ethics and strategy can be found inside.

What makes #GIRLBOSS resonate with so many women is Sophia Amoruso’s accessibility and cool-girl aesthetic. In her writing, she comes across as the girlfriend sitting across the bonfire from you at a chilled out party. She could be you or me, if we had the right attitude and wherewithal to stick with one of our ideas. It is so challenging to stay inspired through the trials of a startup or business idea! Sophia’s personality, and the importance she placed on listening to her customer, helped her build the loyal community that makes up the foundation of Nasty Gal. But there’s more. Since this book was published, her message has resonated with all kinds of women – not just the ones who shop her brand. Sophia’s story and charisma has attracted a much broader audience, especially the business and marketing-minded, regardless of their personal style.

#GIRLBOSS Radio

A #GIRLBOSS Radio podcast has ALSO launched highlighting even more inspirational stories from women who are trailblazers in their fields. Each episode is filled with little gems of advice. I’ve mentioned before that I have a long commute to work, and #GIRLBOSS Radio has reclaimed many an hour of my life as useful. I highly recommend this podcast, especially if you don’t have the time to read books or aren’t as interested in Sophia!

Nasty Galaxy

What’s next on the horizon for Nasty Gal? Sophia is releasing her second, more visual book, Nasty Galaxy, about the Nasty Gal aesthetic. It comes out this month and I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see what’s inside! Since stepping aside from her role as the Nasty Gal CEO, Sophia has a bit more time to create this content, developing herself as a spokesperson for a generation of women more interested in glass ceilings than glass slippers.
