Fall Capsule Wardrobe (aka Black Friday Wishlist)

fall capsule wardrobe 2016

Have you heard of a capsule wardrobe? The idea is that you limit your wardrobe to a certain number of items for 3 months, and purge the rest. This appeals to me for so many reasons in theory, but… I don’t know. To test it out and see how this may look for me, I put together this fall capsule wardrobe, which could also be thought of as a Black Friday wishlist.

The details of capsule wardrobes vary. Project 333 invites people to wear 33 items or less for 3 months. Into Mind is a similar minimal style project. Caroline Rector, one of my favorite capsule collection bloggers, uses her blog Unfancy to document her minimal style where she only 37 pieces for 3 months, before picking new pieces to add to the rotation.

Like the KonMari Method, the essential point in picking capsule wardrobe pieces is to only keep items that you really love. This poses a small problem for me. I don’t think that I really love most of my clothes – and I have so many of them! I would definitely get bored with wearing the same blouses every week, and tend to pick up some trendy pieces that I only wear a few times before abandoning. However, purging my closet of less worn items is really something I should do more often. I get so attached to the memory of an item of clothing that it’s hard for me to let go!

Overall, I think I could wear this collection for at least a month, and may need to rotate in a few other tops. Since this was the first time putting a capsule collection together, there are a few things I would do differently next time. I’d stick with the classics more, and pick higher quality everything. The ease of minimal style is awesome. It’s just so versatile. Let’s be real here – I work full time at a pretty casual office environment, do lots of yoga, and spend most of my limited free time at home. Since I don’t go out too often, I don’t need that many night time or elevated looks. Also, it doesn’t get very cold in Texas during the winter  so I only included light outerwear. In January/February I may need a little warmer coat.
