Hello, summer tassel earrings. If you like to put some fun fringe on like I do, you’re in luck! Throw some easygoing tassels on pretty much everything this summer. Try wearing tassels in a new way with these DIY ombre stacked tassel earrings. It only takes about an hour to make them.
DIY Ombre Stacked Tassel Earrings Materials
1 Skein Dark Blue Embroidery Floss
1 Skein Medium Blue Embroidery Floss
1 Skein Light Blue Embroidery Floss
2 Earring Hooks
2 5mm Jump Rings
1 Embroidery Needle
Fabric or Super Glue
Embroidery Scissors
Washi Tape
DIY Ombre Stacked Tassel Earrings Instructions
First, find a piece of cardstock to use to measure the tassel lengths. I cut a paint chip down to about 1.5 inch width for this. I’m thinking about painting the master bathroom this color, but that’s a different blog post 😉 Is it too girly, though? I can’t commit.
Take one of the embroidery floss skeins, and snip about a 4-inch length of thread. Secure this to one end of the cardstock with 2 pieces of washi tape. This thread will be used to tie the top of the tassel together. This is the top of the tassel.
Line the loose end of the embroidery floss skein up on the opposite side of the cardstock. Begin to carefully wrap the floss around the cardstock, one row evenly spaced after another. I wound it about 6-8 times on the first row, then back to the starting point, then back the other way again. Count the number of wraps on the first tassel, so you can use the same number for each following tassel. Write the number on the back of the piece of cardstock. Once you have your tassel to the desired fluffiness, stop wrapping with the embroidery floss end pointing to the bottom of the tassel.
Hold the threads in place with one thumb, and pull the floss from under the washi tape with the other hand. Tie the ends together in a knot at the top of the tassel.
Slide your embroidery scissors through the crease at the bottom of the tassel, and carefully cut the threads in one clean line. Trim the loose embroidery thread to match the other tassel lengths. I just bought these really cute Gingher gold stork embroidery scissors and they are so adorable I want to cry or sing every time I use them. They’re super sharp and maneuverable, which makes trimming tassels or other threads a dream. Before these came into my life, I was using my tiny sewing machine scissors, which worked just fine.
Wiggle the knot at the top of the tassel to the underside. Drop a bit of craft glue on the knot. Fold the tassel in half, and about half an inch from the top, wrap floss around it four times. Snip the end of the floss, leaving enough room to thread the embroidery needle through it. Smooth a bit of craft glue on the end of thread that will have a knot. Make a sewing knot just under the tassel wrap. Trim the loose ends of the floss so they blend into the tassel.
Repeat the tassel to make 2 in equal size of each 3 colors of thread.
Now it’s time to bind the tassels together in an ombre pattern. Snip a short length of the darker thread, and thread it through the needle. Tie it in a square not at the top of the dark tassle. Seal the knot with glue. Send the needle through the middle of the medium blue tassel. Thread the needle through the bottom of the loop binding the top of the tassel together, and tie it in a square knot. Drop a little glue on the knot, and wiggle it under the tassel loop so it’s hidden from view. Snip the ends of the thread.
Repeat this with a length of the lighter thread, binding the medium blue tassel and the light blue tassel together. Bind the other 3 tassels together in the same way, so you have two sets of matching tassels for earrings.
Next, pry open the jump ring with jeweler’s pliers by twisting the loop to the side. Weave it under the loop at the top of the light blue tassel, and drop the earring hook on it. Close the jump ring the same way you opened it by twisting the loop ends to the center with pliers.
Repeat on the other tassel set.
