Summer is in full swing, along with summer flowers and this diy flower crown if you’re looking for something to do with them. You don’t have to go to San Francisco to wear flowers in your hair. Although if you do go, here’s all the more reason to wear them.
Flower crowns may look a little complicated at first glance, but they’re so simple once you get going. This flower crown took about 20 minutes to make once I gathered all of the materials together.

DIY Flower Crown Instructions
Begin by choosing your flowers. When selecting flowers, pick out a palette of two nice statement flowers, a couple of accent flowers, and some filler greenery. It’s best to chose all your flowers in a variety of textures for interest. A summer seasonal flower bunch would be perfect. Remember that you don’t actually need that many flowers to make a crown. This is meant for your head, and giant flowers will dwarf your face. Unless that’s what you are going for – the emphasis definitely brings interest. Just ask Iris.
For my flower crown, I chose burgundy flowers and pink snapdragons for the statement flowers. For accent flowers, I went with lavender and white daisies.
Gather your flower crown materials together. Use the scissors to snip little bunches of each type of flower off the stem in preparation for the crown.
Cut a length of thick green wreath wire to size for your head. I like this green wreath wire because it’s sturdy and camouflages well in a wreath. If you don’t have wreath wire, green flower wire or twine works just fine.
Mold the wreath wire into a loop that fits comfortably on your head. Use the shears or pliers to bend the ends of the wreath wire back in little hooks that clasp the crown in a circle. Feel free to experiment here. I’ve seen some half flower crown shapes that can sit at the back or front of the crown of your head. Whatever shape you choose, completely mold the final shape during this step. Once the crown has flowers on it, it will be too delicate to bend or adjust much without crushing the flowers.
Begin to use the flower wire and flower tape to bind the flowers to the crown. For my crown, I built the flower design around the asymmetrical intersection of two snapdragons.
Use flower tape to bind the statement flowers to the crown first, and then fill the spaces with accent flowers and greenery. As you make the crown, periodically try it on and adjust flowers as needed. That’s it! Flower crowns are actually really easy to make. You may want to embellish the ends or back of the crown with ribbon lengths.
Where to Wear a Flower Crown
Flower crowns come and go as a trend. Are they in or are they out? Should you wear them to a festival or a wedding, or is it gauche this year? Really, I don’t care. They’re always cute and in an intimate setting no one will judge. They make a great accent for any wedding party or a whimsical summer dinner party with friends. These easy conversation pieces make every gal feel special.
Take a flower crown at a festival with a grain of salt. Flowers wilt! If you really want the crown to last longer than a few hours, buy or make one with artificial flowers. Just have fun with it.
