Does anyone else see cat ears everywhere these days? They are so cute! These diy cat ears were made with a beautiful eyelash lace over a stretchy knit, but you could easily make them with or without the underlayer. They would also look really cute with a different kind of lace underneath so the light could shine through the ears. This is officially my favorite DIY to date! I’d like to make multiple versions – even to leave off the lace and embellish the frame with pearls, rhinestones or flowers for a playful everyday (night) look.
DIY Cat Ears Materials
2 8-Inch Lengths of Floral Wire (Jewelry or industrial wire will work too)
1 Black Headband
1 Foot of Black Eyelash Lace
1 Foot of Black Knit Fabric
Black Thread
Needle Nose Pliers
Wire Clippers
DIY Cat Ears Instructions
Fold the lengths of wire in half, to roughly the cat ear point that you like. You may want to sketch a little pattern on a sheet of printing paper to make sure the wires match up. I just stacked mine to check them. Roll up the ends into a coil, to the place where you want to attach the wire to the headband. Check the cat ear shape works by putting the headband on and holding the triangles up to it.
Attach the ears to the headband by unrolling the coils around the base of where the ears should start on the headband. Roll the coils to the inside of the ear, so when you cover the ear with fabric the coils will be covered to.
Try the cat ear headband frame on to make sure it looks right. 🙂
Cut two pieces of lace and black fabric, big enough to wrap around the ear frame. I cut my lace so an eyelash triangle would fall in the center of both ears from the front.
Next, turn the fabric with the lace inside, and carefully line up the lace pattern on the opposite ear if you want the pattern to shop right-side.
Sew the fabric in a triangle shape from the tip of the ear to the center of the top of the headband. Trim the edge of the fabric so there’s about a quarter inch tapering at the ear point. This will keep it from bunching when you turn it inside out. Repeat on both sides.
Flip the fabric so the lace part is on the outside. You should have two little fabric “pockets”. Line them up on the cat ears to make sure they fit. Sew the triangles onto the base of the headband with a whipstitch, carefully covering up the floral wire on either end.
That’s it! Wear them. They’re cute 🙂
