Day For Night 2015 Houston

Day For Night was last weekend, and it was refreshing. I wish the music festival had been the kickoff for an 8 week art exhibition, but all of the art came down after the weekend was over. Chris worked on some of the art install. I helped talk him through how to do some of it. When I was younger I did art install at a few galleries and museums, so I showed him a few tricks.

Here are a few photos from the festival, in no particular order. I should have taken more, but I didn’t.

There were so many great bands. Dan Deacon was really interactive with the crowd. This was his last show on his tour, so he was very energetic. Health was dreamy shoegazer metal, kind of like My Bloody Valentine. Coco Rosie was cute until someone stole my phone. Chris met Com Truise again, who is always cool. We listen to Com Truise while we drive to go surfing. Very surfy music.

Cheers.

CocoRosie is so adorable that I didn’t notice the girl standing next to me stealing my phone.

Waiting for the magic.

This is light.

This is water.

This is Cynthia.

Chris meets Com Truise. Two bearded fellows talking about drums together. Much chill.

Com Truise is melting circuits.

This is Dan Deacon. He is done dying.

This is Com Truise. He is in Kontrol.

This is Dan Deacon, torn out and thrown in the sky.

This is Kam from the Suffers doing a sound check.

This is Health.

This is Health. He has great hair.

This is Health.

This is Elliphant. She is Swedish.

This is not a band called “White Whale”, but I think that would be a great name for them.

This is Health.

Over the past few years, the aesthetic and personality of the Houston that I grew up with has… dispersed. More and more of the artistic types have had to move away from the art neighborhoods, or at least I have. I saw a lot more familiar faces at this festival than I have in a long time, and felt like the city was saying we are still here. Even though “we” might be a little gnarly to begin with. Maybe it is a good thing that “we” are not as here as we used to be. I have mixed feelings.
