Halloween is here! Of course, I made a black cat pumpkin with chalk paint. This cat pumpkin is super easy to assemble and looks adorable. It takes minimal carving, and doesn’t make that much of a mess either. I love the way the matte chalk paint looks. It’s so smooth and velvety.

Chalk Paint Cat Pumpkin Materials

1 Large Pumpkin
1 Small Pie Pumpkin
2 Tangerines
1 Cucumber
1 Piece of Black Felt
Chalk Paint
1 Tea Light
8 Sewing Pins

You’ll also need a paring knife to carve the pumpkin, of course, and a paintbrush to paint with.

Chalk Paint Cat Pumpkin Directions

First, wash all of the produce. All of the materials should be at room temperature before painting. Otherwise, condensation may accumulate on the surface and thin the paint. Coat the gourds and fruits with two even coats of black chalk paint. If you don’t have chalk paint, you can buy some or make some by adding chalk to regular black paint. To help the paint dry faster, I set a little fan up to blow on the produce.

Once the paint is dry, take the smaller pumpkin and draw a circle around the top with a pencil. Cut the top off in a circle using the paring knife. Scoop the seeds & all out of the middle. Flip the pumpkin upside down, and draw two little triangle eyes on the side of the “head”. Cut them out with the paring knife. Place the head on top of the larger pumpkin “body”. Almost done!

For the ears, take the black felt and cut two matching triangular ear shapes out. You can measure if you like, but I just eyeballed it. Make sure to cut 1/4 inch extra length at the bottom of the ear to fold like a kickstand so the ear will stand up. Notch the bottom middle of the ear so it will slightly bow in at the bottom when it’s standing up. Attach each ear to the pumpkin head with four sewing pins at the corners of either side of the felt ends, and either side of the middle ear notches.

Cut the stem off the larger pumpkin, so the tea light can rest in the notch left on top. Line the orange “paws” and cucumber “tail” up to make the complete “cat”, top with the pumpkin head, and set it on your doorstep. Light a candle and enjoy!
